In 2004 we took a whole team to Fairbanks, Alaska for the World Ice Carving Championships. The first part of the week we had 2 teams in the single block, carving the super large Alaska ice.. 5′ x 8′ .. and came in 2nd and 3rd in the Abstract category. Carl and John created the fruit tree, which had ice lenses for fruit.. Carl demonstrated that he could start a fire with an ice lense and sunlight. Peter and David did their swirling piece, Raven steals the Sun, which place 3rd in the abstract category.
In the multi block event, we ditched our plans to make a Circus scene.. and improvised a fun piece depicting the wind in the trees. We used the white ice rind from the blocks to create 20 ‘ tall trees.. and all sorts of spirals and curls. We were very pleased with the outcome, a 2nd prize with the First going to a lovely Russian cubic representation of the Michaelangelo’s Creation.
